Winner of five Pichichi trophies, ex-striker Hugo Sanchez was important not just to Real Madrid but to all of Spain, according to teammate and current Director of International Relations Emilio Butragueno.
Just arriving in Mexico, 'El Buitre' is attending an official event sponsored by the spanish government that celebrates those in the business and sporting world who have improved the image of the country abroad.
"Hugo Sanchez helped unify Spain and Mexico," Butragueno said of his Mexican teammate. "If Spain has to thank a Mexican citizen for improving relations between the two countries, Hugo Sanchez is one who undeniably deserves recognition.
"He has been a fantastic ambassador of Mexico in Spain, and now of Real Madrid in Mexico."It won't be long before Hugo Sánchez drops from third to fourth in La Liga's all-time scoring charts after Cristiano Ronaldo equalled the Mexican's haul of 234 goals in the Spanish top flight, which were all scored for clubs that call the Spanish capital home: Atlético Madrid, Real Madrid and Rayo Vallecano.
However, Sánchez can console himself with the fact that he still holds a record that no player in the world, let alone La Liga, has managed to match: his unbeatable tally of first-time finishes in a single season.
Feast your eyes on the video above to witness Sánchez's incredible scoring exploits to lift the Pichichi Trophy in the 1989-90 campaign. On no fewer than 38 occasions, one touch was all the Mexico legend needed to ripple the opposition net. Simply incredible.
