Aphoto of Cristiano Ronaldo posing on a Buddhist statue has provoked heavy criticism, accusing the Real Madrid star of not paying proper respect to the religion.
Standing nonchalantly with his hands in his pockets, the Portuguese winger is pictured straddling the icon with one foot placed up onto the platform, an act considered disrespectful by many.
"Its basic knowledge that you cannot put your foot on a religious statue," wrote one commenter on Ronaldo's facebook page."I am your fan, but you should respect Buddha," wrote another, "This photo hits our (Buddhism's) heart."
"This is so disrespectful... How can he put his leg on Gautam Buddha," said one upset fan.
However, the photo remains on the player's social media channels, gaining over 1 million likes, as do most of his posts.
