While fans of Real Madrid were delighted at the news that Toni Kroos has renewed his contract until 2022, Pep Guardiola will have been far less pleased, given that the German was his number one midfield target. The Catalan coach didn't want Kroos to swap Munich for Madrid in the summer of 2014 as he considered him the brains of his Bayern team, but ultimately there was nothing he could do to block the transfer.
Since joining Manchester City, however, a reunion with the World Cup winner was once again a possibility and Guardiola wanted to bring the midfielder to the Etihad to be the finishing touch to his Sky Blues squad.
In response, Los Blancos accelerated contract talks in order to tie Kroos to the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu until 2022, leaving their old rival without his dream midfield maestro.
