Barcelona on verge of sealing new shirt sponsorship deal

The clock is ticking for Barcelona to pick their shirt sponsor for the 2017/18 season with a deal to either renew with Qatar Airways or sign on with a new name in the works. Before the end of the calendar year will be the club's assembly, and officials want the agreement in place by then so that members can vote on the matter. La Vanguardia report that the contract will be three years, although other lengths cannot be ruled out with the unnamed company nearing a completed deal. Barcelona lost out in their 2016/17 shirt sponsorship to the tune of 25 million euros after delays in agreeing a fresh extension with Qatar Airways, but this new plan will see their current income almost double and reach 65m euros.
In the coming days the deal will be announced, barring any last minute hiccups, ahead of the aforementioned approval sought from the Blaugrana assembly. With Japanese e-commerce company Rakuten now ruled out of the running, Amazon are set to challenge for their name to be worn on the Primera Divison champions' shirts. According to Catalan radio station RAC1, Barcelona are hopeful of confirming the identity of the new sponsor in time for their International Champions Cup match with Celtic on July 30. Qatar Airways have sponsored the strip since the 2013/14 season but have failed to reach an agreement with Camp Nou officials over a renewal. However, the hopes of club president Josep Maria Bartomeu - commanding a fee in the region of 65 million euros - are unlikely to be met by Amazon's proposal.
