Remembering what Real Madrid has been and what the club is now, President Florentino Perez addressed all of the supporters who have been members for 60, 50 and 25 years respectively, and also announced that Cristiano Ronaldo would become Alfredo di Stefano's successor in the eyes of many. Before giving them a distinctive insignia as symbol of their loyalty, Perez talked about what the club represents and it's value to world football. "Real Madrid is a feeling, the club of the 11 European Cups and an example to all," he began. "We are insatiable and we want more, despite having the best history in the world. "We are strong and we are competitive but every day will be more complicated by the arrival of investors at other clubs."
The president also wanted to acknowledge the part played by Zinedine Zidane and Ronaldo in the clubs' recent history. "Zidane came here to change the history of Real Madrid and he is also a symbol of what this club is. "Ronaldo will get the fourth Ballon d'Or in few days. He is one of our legends, Di Stefano's successor." In conclusion, he spoke directly to all members, leaving them in no doubt as to their importance to Los Blancos. "Real Madrid is universal, it belongs to everyone. Our club is the most important club in history," Perez continued. "You are an example for all, symbolising commitment and loyalty. "This insignia represents the sacred values of Real Madrid because without union we have nothing. "We have to be together and support all our players."
Each supporter was handed an insignia - 1084 Silver, 442 Gold and 165 platinum representing the length of time each had been a club member. The Portuguese star's haul of 35 goals and 11 assists saw him stave off competition from fierce rival Lionel Messi to win the award, but despite huge success over the past season, Ronaldo remains determined to give his all in the pursuit of further trophies. "[The 2015/16 season] was filled with many emotions with the Champions League and the European Championship," he told the audience at the Florida Retiro. "Today has also been a very special day with my contract renewal and a prize from MARCA, what else I can ask for? "I'm very happy. This motivates me to keep working and get better in the next few years." Asked about this year's LaLiga title race, the 31-year-old is unsurprised by Real's stiff competition, and expects whoever works hardest to eventually emerge triumphant. "It's as competitive as expected, but this is not a sprint, it's a marathon and we are going to fight," he stated. "As always God will help whoever works hardest."
