Iago Aspas: Spain's Wembley hero

Iago Aspas wrote his name into Spanish folklore at Wembley as he became one of only a handful of greats to score on his debut with the national team, with Fernando Morientes the player of note to achieve this. The goal, which gave La Roja a lifeline against England, will no doubt have brought a wry smile to the faces of Liverpool fans, as the Celta Vigo striker left Anfield with his tale between his legs in 2014, after netting just once in 15 games. "I am very happy," said Aspas. "To make my debut with the national team in Wembley and to score a goal on top of that is the dream debut. "It's just a shame it wasn't a competitive match and we didn't win."
Morientes joined the Spanish greats when he netted two against Sweden on his international bow in 1998. Back in the Spain's early 'glory days', the great Alfredo Di Stefano also achieved the feat, and Gaspar Rubio scored with a minute of his debut. It wasn't an easy start, but Aspas' introduction helped turn the tide, when an exquisite solo goal on the break helped wake up an unrecognisable La Roja side. "I couldn't be happier," Aspas told TV5. "It was a difficult match in a special stadium. "We saved the marbles with the draw at the end. "These players make it much easier to play well and they make it possible to have fun out there on the pitch."
