Madrid derby beckons for Griezmann



Despite a blow to the left foot suffered on international duty, Antoine Griezmann is determined not to miss Saturday's Madrid derby, and currently stands a good chance of making the match at the Estadio Vicente CalderonSent home early from France duty, the initial signs were that his recovery was going as planned - and in recent days the attacker has stepped up his rehabilitation even further by training at Atletico's Majadahonda base. On Wednesday, Griezmann completed several exercises indoors before moving outside to take part in predominantly running drills.
Alongside fitness coach Oscar Pitillas, the ex-Real Sociedad striker showed no adverse reaction to the series of sprints, twists and turns, indicating that medically, he is getting closer to playing against city rivals Real Madrid this weekend. After having played 45 minutes for Spain against England on Tuesday evening, Koke rejoined the group for morning training. The Rojiblancos squad was also bolstered by the returning duo Lucas Hernandez and Thomas Partey, who both completed the first session with the group. Elsewhere, first-teamers Saul Niguez and Kevin Gameiro, who played with Spain Under-21s and France respectively over the international break, exercised in the gym as part of their own fitness programmes.Antoine Griezmann to be ready for their visit on Saturday evening and the Frenchman is making important steps in his efforts to be fit for the LaLiga fixture.
After a light jog around Atletico Madrid's training ground with fitness coach Oscar Pitillas, Griezmann took part in some more intense drills before a few ball exercises in an individual session after the first-team squad vacated the pitches. The fact that the striker managed just 20 minutes of full activity shows that he's still got some ground to make up before the weekend, but is nonetheless progressing well. Yannick Carrasco was also present at Majadahonda having completed his Belgium duties, working in the gym alone during yesterday afternoon and back with the squad today. The others involved in first-team training undertook strength and coordination exercises and position-based drills while Tiago worked on his aerobic fitness having only just returned from a long-term injury.
