Barcelona are living in the present but planning for the future, so after already renewing Neymar's contract, and close to finishing up Luis Suarez's, they decided to make sure Lionel Messi will remain at the club as well. When will Messi renew his contract? His contract up in 2018, in less than two months time president Josep Maria Bartomeu has promised supporters Messi will have a new deal.
In what conditions?
The club continue to undergo measures to make sure Barcelona are as competitive as possible, and Messi be surrounded by some of the biggest stars in world football, creating a comfortable dressing room dynamic with close friends like Luis Suarez and Neymar on and off the pitch. With Neymar earning 25 million euros (net) a season, Messi's deal is expected to be an even greater sum to remain the most highly played footballer amongst the squad.Suarez, on the other hand, earns 25 million before taxes, placing him amongst the squad's highest earners but the lowest amongst the front three. Last time around, it was believed Messi and the Catalan club agreed to a 50 million euro salary (before taxes), which could be set to continue once the new agreement is signed.
What could prevent Messi from signing an extension?
Money is not an issue for either party, and Barcelona have done all they can to make sure the player retires at the Camp Nou, though there is always the possibility that Messi does decide to return to Newell's Old Boys, his childhood club.Messi too is happy at the club, so the biggest roadblock could be the courts, as the No. 10 has been implicated for tax fraud, sentenced to 21 months in prison last July and fined 3.5 million euros. In other words, it seems as though only legal complications would prevent the inevitable. Bartomeu and the board have made sure the MSN remain intact for the near future, and Lionel Messi, with a new deal only a matter of time, will stick around to lead the team to new heights.
