Try as they might, Gerard Pique's La Roja colleagues and staff don't have a chance of getting the Catalan to reverse his decision of leaving the national team at the end of World Cup 2018. He hasn't gone yet though, and Spain still longs for a player who, along with Sergio Ramos and Andres Iniesta, are the biggest miss of Julen Lopetegui's selection for the double header against Macedonia and England. The Barcelona defender continues to work his way back to fitness but whilst so doing, he has received almost constant calls and messages to get him to reconsider his position with regards to Spain. Lopetegui considers Pique a vital part of his team and the coach would have preferred that the decision had not been made public well in advance. For that reason, the Spanish Federation have looked for a reversal but the centre-back won't budge.
His decision was not heat-of-the-moment and had been considered over time before being announced. An issue with the sleeves of the national team shirt and even receiving whistles from the crowd, merely confirmed to Pique he was making the correct decision. He's not the only one with that thought either. The idea had matured with other players who also see that their cycle with Spain is nearing its end. They feel that the time has come to give way to others and to prioritise other issues in their lives.
