Max Eberl, sporting director of Borussia Monchengladbach, has responded to claims from Alvaro Dominguez that he was treated poorly by the club.
The defender announced his retirement from the game this week at the age of 27 after a series of chronic back problems.
In an exclusive interview with MARCA, Dominguez suggested that he was not treated properly by Monchengladbach throughout his injury and insisted that such a situation would never have occurred with a LaLiga side, much to the chagrin of Eberl.
"Sadly, Alvaro has made some serious accusations that we simply can't understand," stated Eberl. "Of course, we understand that this is an emotional time he is going through after making such a difficult decision but our medical team did absolutely everything possible to help him.
"The same goes for the club, with those involved helping where we could and were allowed to help and we will continue to do so in the future. We are there for Alvaro!"
Dominguez claimed that the Bundesliga side did not make a proper diagnosis of his injury and tried to make him play through the pain and also revealed that he had to cover his own medical expenses.Barcelona goalkeeper and former Borussia Monchengladbach star Marc-Andre ted Stegen has sent his best wishes to his old teammate Alvaro Dominguez following his retirement.
The 27-year-old called time on his career this week after a difficult past 18 months in which he struggled badly with back problems.
Ter Stegen, who lined up alongside the Spaniard during their time together at Borussia Park, has spent a message of support to Dominguez via his Instagram account.
"In every sport an injury is the most frustrating period for an athlete. To end a career early because of this is a tough decision to make," wrote Ter Stegen, alongside a picture of himself embracing Dominguez.
"But we must never forget that health is the most important, always! I'm sad to see you hang up your boots so early. You have been a great defender who was always working hard to get better, a true professional!
"I wish you all the best in your further life and I'm sure you will find something new and special to discover."
