Despite being Spain's second largest city, the national football team hasn't played in Barcelona since 2004, with no competitive game there in over 31 years, although one group want to change that.
Amid a tense political climate and growing calls for Catalunya to separate out as an independent nation, the divisions across Spanish society have quickly spread right across football on the Iberian Peninsula.
However, 'Barcelona con la Seleccion' (BCLS) are pushing for La Roja to return to Barcelona and have announced that their Change.org petition to see the World Cup qualifier with Italy played in the region has hit 10,000 signatures.
With the game set for September 2, 2017, there is plenty of time for the BCLS' motion to gain further traction, although the challenges remain complex.
For instance, their aim is now to earn the support of Catalan and Spanish politicians as well as that of Barcelona and Espanyol, with ideally Estadio Cornella-El Prat or the Camp Nou hosting the game, although neither has volunteered yet.
Historically, Barcelona are certainly a key home for La Roja, with 18 internationals held in the city, a number beaten by only Madrid, Seville, and Valencia.
