The Portuguese international is set to battle it out against Antoine Griezmann and Lionel Messi for football's most prized award after the trio of players managed to beat off competition from the likes of Sergio Aguero, Gareth Bale, Gianluigi Buffon, Luka Modric, and Neymar to cement their place in the final three. And the 31-year-old will undoubtedly be considered favourite ahead of the gala on January 9 after helping Real Madrid claim their 11th Champions League title and leading Portugal in their maiden European Championship triumph back in July.
Lionel Messi, though, will still hold out hope of a sixth World Player of the Year crown after leading Barcelona to a domestic double with 50 goals scores in all competitions.Atletico Madrid star man Antoine Griezmann, meanwhile, looks an outsider for the award despite a great season in which he led Diego Simeone's men to the Champions League final before losing out to Ronaldo's team in the Euro 2016 final.
