Atletico Madrid suffered a 3-0 defeat away at Villarreal on Monday nightto leave them 12 points behind Real Madrid in LaLiga, but Diego Simeone couldn't fault his players' effort.
The Argentine insisted that his team has been working well in recent weeks, but that Los Rojiblancos are simply lacking the slice of good fortune necessary to get back to winning ways.
"I leave with the feeling that my team is fighting and working and looking for the best way to win, but that the results are not going our way," he said in his post-match press conference.
"We had four clear chances in the first half, while Villarreal took every chance that they had.
"Working is the only way to improve, so we have to keep working.
"Yet we will accept the criticism because when a team loses twice in a row then they have to improve."
Besides the result, another negative from the match was the fact that Jan Oblak and Tiago Mendes had to be substituted with first half injuries and the coach was not overly optimistic about the one suffered by his goalkeeper as the second goal went in.
"The worst of the injuries is Oblak's so we hope it's not too serious," he told reporters.
"Tiago has a pain in his knee and we thought the best thing would be to substitute him.
"With Oblak's injury and with the score at 2-0, the second half wasn't easy, but the team tried everything it could to get on the scoreboard."
Asked about some of the players left out of the match such as Fernando Torres, Simeone explained that he had lost two substitutions to the injuries, so his options from the bench were limited.
Next up for Simeone and Los Rojiblancos is the visit of Las Palmas on Saturday afternoon.
