How Qatar funded the development of Barcelona and PSG

Both Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain will head into their Champions League last-16 clash with some of the biggest superstars in world football to show for, and they both have Qatar to thank.
The duo have been sponsored by the Qatari government since 2011/12, with lucrative deals allowing both sides to invest in world's most talented players; a total of 1.225 billion euros spent on signings alone.
Barcelona, for instance, made the most of their economic privilege by signing Luis Suarez and Neymar to form arguably the world's most lethal attacking trident, costing them over 160 million euros in the process.
Meanwhile, their French rivals have spent a truckload on the signings of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Edinson Cavani, Angel Di Maria, Thiago Silva and Javier Pastore in recent years as they attempt to build a prestigious club of their own.
The additional financial boosts have seen both sides pitted against each other on the transfer market too with the Parc des Princes outfit most notably beating the Catalans to the signing of defensive trio David Luiz, Thiago Silva and Marquinhos.
In total, the Parisians have spent a whopping 702m euros whilst Barcelona have paid 523m euros in signings since their respective deals commenced.
