Twenty-four years since Beckham's debut

At some of the best clubs in world football, such as Real Madrid, Manchester United and Milan, David Beckham made a name for himself, and it is now 24 years since his debut with the Red Devils. Born in Leytonstone, just outside of London, the player was a success both on and off the pitch. Here are some of the highlights:

Beginnings

His father was a Manchester United fanatic and signed up a young David to a skills competition organised by Bobby Charlton, which an 11-year-old Beckham went on to win. Although he had a chance to train with the La Masia academy in Barcelona, ultimately the English player returned since the fit wasn't right.

Debut

At the age of 17, Beckham made his debut in the Capital One Cup against Brighton.
With the weight of the No. 7 on his back, the winger set out to become the heir to Eric Cantona's throne. In Week 1 of the 1996/97 campaign, Beckham scored one of his most memorable goals from midfield against Wimbledon.
Ferguson threw a shoe at his player after a defensive error against Arsenal in the league cup. Hitting him in the eyebrow, Beckham moved on from the episode, embarking on one of the most celebrated careers in world football.
In Manchester alone, Beckham won six Premier Leagues, 2 FA Cups and one Champions League in 1999.

A difficult year with England

Harshly criticised, a questionable decision from the United star when making a tackle on Diego Simeone in the 1998 World Cup left England with 10 men, and after the eventual defeat, he was picked out for criticism.
To turn things around and get his home country back on his side, Beckham scored one of his most famous free-kicks against Greece ensuring the Three Lion's qualification to the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and japan
