Spain's memories of Wembley

England will host the Spanish national team on Tuesday night at Wembley, a stadium in which La Roja has only won once over the course of the historic venue's two lifetimes - from 1923-2002 and from 2007 to the present.

The first time Spain took on the English at the capital city venue was in 1955, when Jose Maria Maguregui returned to the Iberian Peninsula impressed by the immaculate turf, even though England had sent their guests packing with a 4-1 victory.

Five years later the two sides met in north-west London once again, but the result was similar as La Roja lost 4-2. However, Spain midfielder Luis del Sol - who scored one of his side's goals, with Luis Suarez netting the other - left just as impressed as Maguregui had. "Even though it rained a lot, the pitch was in perfect condition," he told MARCA.

Jose Angel Iribar's great save on the road to Euro 1976

Severino Reija and Jose Angel Iribar would take part in the next failed visit to Wembley, as the Spanish fell to a 2-0 defeat in 1967, but both players were impressed by the scene. "Wembley was a mythical stadium and a famous location where it was difficult to draw and even harder to win," the goalkeeper Iribar remembered.

"It was the cathedral of European football and it was amazing to be able to play there," ex-Real Zaragoza player Reija said of his Wembley experience.

1981: Spain's only victory

Finally, on March 25, 1981, Spain tasted victory at 'the home of football,' with Jesus Mari Zamora scoring the second in the 2-1 win. "I remember everything about that trip, such as the arrival to this extraordinary stadium, the warm-ups, the dressing rooms and the fans," he said of the historic match.

England and Spain all square at Euro 1996

Not until Euro 1996 would the two nations meet at Wembley again, but this trip was not quite as enjoyable for La Roja as they crashed out of the tournament on penalties in the quarter-finals, after they had played out a goalless draw with the Three Lions in normal time.

Only once before has Spain visited the new Wembley, losing 1-0 in 2011, but Fernando Torres was not particularly impressed. "I understand the history, but the stadium doesn't have a special meaning for me and I prefer Anfield," El Nino said. Should Julen Lopetegui's side win on Tuesday evening then the new stadium may suddenly seem special once more.
